How often do taxi drivers need a medical?

After the medical you take to get licensed, a London taxi driver needs another at 50, 56, 62 and 65, and every year after that. A driver who does not provide one after a reminder risks losing their licence.

Checked against TfL's documents on 3 October 2026.

Private hire drivers start earlier, at 45. TfL's web page mentions a medical for applicants over 45 whose last one was more than three years ago; its policy gives the 50, 56, 62 and 65 timetable for licensed taxi drivers.

If you miss one

A licensed driver who does not provide an age-related medical within 21 days of a reminder faces having their licence revoked.
