Can I be a taxi driver with a mental health condition?

Often, yes. TfL asks drivers to seek medical help and says that where they do, and take treatment, it is unlikely to act on their licence. Fitness is judged against the DVLA Group 2 standard case by case, and TfL's medical adviser decides doubtful cases.

Checked against TfL's documents on 3 October 2026.

TfL's position

TfL's health and wellbeing page encourages drivers to look after their mental health and to seek medical help. It says that in most cases, where a driver seeks help and has treatment, it is unlikely to take licensing action.

How fitness is decided

Every applicant must meet the DVLA Group 2 standard, assessed by a doctor with your full records. TfL's documents do not list conditions that rule a driver out; where a case is not clear, its occupational medical adviser decides, and you can send further evidence.

If your health changes while you are on the Knowledge, or you start medication that could affect driving, tell TfL straight away. Telling them early is far better than it coming to light later.
