What TfL suggests
- A reliable moped, scooter or bike, with protective clothing.
- Good maps, at least three inches to the mile (5 cm to the kilometre).
- A call-over partner, someone to put questions to you the way examiners do.
Why a moped
You can learn by car, but TfL's booklet lists the moped's advantages: it is easy to manoeuvre, can use bus lanes, and pays no Congestion Charge, though ULEZ rules still apply. Going over each run on the road is the point: TfL is clear that maps and apps help, but do not replace being there.
The CBT
Unless you already hold a licence for a moped or scooter, you need a compulsory basic training certificate to ride one on L plates. It lasts two years, so a long Knowledge may need a second one.
