How are Knowledge appearances marked?

Each of the four questions is worth 10 marks, so 40 in all. 36 to 40 is an A, 32 to 35 a B, 24 to 31 a C and under 24 a D. You lose marks for wrong street names, a longer route, illegal turns, setting down wrongly and hesitating.

Checked against TfL's documents on 3 October 2026.

The questions

The examiner asks four questions, time allowing, and each is worth 10 marks. For each one you are given two points: you say where each is, then call the shortest legal route from the first to the second.

Where marks go

  • Wrong or missing street names.
  • A route that is not the shortest.
  • Leaving or setting down on the wrong side, or where you could not stop.
  • Banned turns, U-turns, no-entry streets, going the wrong way down a one-way street.
  • Hesitating.
  • Failing to locate a point: one mark for each.

An illegal manoeuvre scores zero for that run, though not for the rest of the appearance. So does giving up on a run, or locating both points but being unable to call the route.

Grades

GradeMarksPoints
A36 to 406
B32 to 354
C24 to 313
DUnder 240

After each appearance you get a sheet showing where you lost marks. TfL audits grading, and may make you repeat an appearance if one was graded wrongly.
