TheLTK

How long do you have for each stage of the Knowledge?

Two years to learn the 320 runs and sit the written exam, then three years for Stage 3, two for Stage 4 and one for Stage 5. The final exam must follow within six months of finishing Stage 5. Run out of time and you meet an examiner, and may go back a stage.

Checked against TfL's documents on 3 October 2026.

If you run out of time

You are called to a meeting with an examiner, and you may agree to go back to an easier stage. Leave the final exam more than six months, or fail it three times, and your Stage 3 to 5 knowledge is assessed again.

Going back by choice

You can also ask, in writing, to drop back a stage. The Knowledge Manager decides, and can grant an extension for exceptional personal circumstances.
