What are 56s, 28s and 21s?

Candidates' names for the three stages of appearances, after the gap between them: Stage 3 appearances come about every 56 days, Stage 4 every 28 and Stage 5 every 21. TfL itself calls them Stages 3, 4 and 5.

Checked against TfL's documents on 3 October 2026.

Moving through them

You need 12 points to leave each stage: 6 for an A, 4 for a B, 3 for a C. Each stage also has a time limit: three years for 56s, two for 28s and one for 21s.

The names are the candidates' own. TfL's documents call them Stages 3, 4 and 5, and its 2022 booklet basic, intermediate and advanced.
