Is the Suburban Knowledge easier?

It is smaller. There is no self-assessment and no written exam, and you learn your sector's runs rather than all 320, with up to a year to do it. But you learn every point within half a mile of each end, not a quarter, and the final exam asks central London too.

Checked against TfL's documents on 3 October 2026.

What is smaller

  • No self-assessment, and no written exam.
  • Your sector's runs instead of all 320. TfL says the number varies with the size of the sector, and gives you up to a year to learn them.

What is not

  • You learn every street and point within half a mile of each end of a run, twice the All London radius.
  • Appearances at Stages 3 to 5 work the same way, with the same 12 points to move up. Stage 5 can ask the main places in the sectors next to yours.
  • The final exam asks routes from a major rank in your sector to a major transport hub, plus ten central London points, and you need the way to Heathrow and London City Airport.

Moving up later

A licensed Suburban driver can add sectors, or go All London, by completing the full Knowledge for the extra area, without a new application.
