What is the difference between a green and a yellow badge?

A green badge is an All London licence: you can be hailed anywhere in Greater London. A yellow badge is a Suburban licence for one of nine outer London sectors, and you can be hailed only there. The Suburban Knowledge is smaller.

Checked against TfL's documents on 3 October 2026.

The badge itself

Every taxi driver wears a badge while working, green or yellow, with the badge number across the middle, and shows matching identifiers in the cab's front and rear windows. Suburban identifiers carry the sector's code, S1 to S9.

Our guide green or yellow badge lists the boroughs in each sector.
