How much is the Knowledge written exam?

£225, and you pay it each time you sit the exam. You book and pay through the Knowledge team, and you must give 48 hours' notice if you cannot attend or you lose the fee. Suburban candidates do not sit it.

Checked against TfL's documents on 3 October 2026.

Paying for each sitting

TfL's fee table lists the written exam at £225, for All London candidates only. Its booklet adds that the fee is due for each exam you sit, so a re-sit costs another £225.

Booking

You book and pay by contacting the Knowledge team. Give at least 48 hours' notice if you cannot attend; otherwise the fee is not refunded.

Keeping the cost down

The self-assessment after your first 80 runs is set out like the written exam and costs nothing, so it is a free look at the format. And a low score costs more than a second fee: it means a longer wait before you can sit again. See failing the written exam.
