What happens if I fail the Knowledge written exam?

You sit it again, as often as you need, paying £225 each time, but the wait grows with each fail. After a first fail with 30 to 59 marks you can re-sit when you like; under 30 means six months. By the fourth fail the wait is a year.

Checked against TfL's documents on 3 October 2026.

No limit on attempts

TfL's policy says you can retake the written exam as many times as you wish; failing it is not a reason to refuse your application. But if you do not ask for a re-sit within the time you are given, your application is ended.

Each sitting is paid

£225 a time. A score under 30 costs you the most: a longer wait as well as another fee.
