TheLTK

Is the Knowledge self-assessment compulsory?

Yes, for All London candidates. You take it after the first 80 runs, within six months of starting. It is set out like the written exam and you mark your own paper with an examiner present; no record of your score is kept.

Checked against TfL's documents on 3 October 2026.

What it is

A practice run of the written exam, after the first five lists of the Blue Book. It follows the same format: routes to choose between, and points to place. You mark your own paper with an examiner in the room, and the result is yours alone.

When

Within six months of starting the Knowledge. Older guidance, from 2011, called it optional; TfL's current page and its 2022 booklet both say it is compulsory.

Who takes it

All London candidates only. The Suburban Knowledge has no self-assessment and no written exam.
